What Then Is An Educated Man?

Education plays an imperative role in the enhancement of the world’s hasty civilization. It gives us prowess in our daily fracas with such vicious cycle called LIFE. However, it is not WISDOM at all. It is just a stride in attaining what we want to know or the society dictates what we should know. I, for one, am a true believer of education. Coming from an ordinary family, I have ascertained that ,indeed, education gives bliss to anyone who has it, a value that can surpass WEALTH, …but only if, it is used along with the heart. Indeed, our mind is our hegemony, but our heart is the center of our soul. So now, what then is an educated man?

“Is he the man who has read a lot? Is he the man who has read many facts and events?“, as what stated in one of my oratorical pieces during my high school days in Liceo de Cagayan University. It is like a de javu. When I woke up this morning, this arduous question struck my mind. It played and played like a broken record. So many people and experiences I have remembered. I have known quite a number of people who have not obtained college or university diplomas; nevertheless, they are successful in their chosen sphere. I remember my previous employer, who is a nautical degree holder in an unknown college in Cebu City, has successfully raised his banner. Now, he is one of the top players in the local IT hub. Being a businessman, moreso, in the IT industry, you need to be equipped with enough knowledge of the English language. But he is exactly the opposite. He can’t speak or write English well. I had to do his correspondence. But he is has a brawn of Ayala-Zobel and a charisma of Brad Pitt. He is an epitome of a true blue businessman with a heart. In all fairness to him, he is getting better and better each year, communication-wise. On the other side of the fence, I have a neighbor who comes from a prominent family, with siblings in all sort of professions, and graduated in Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan with honor. At 40, he has not experienced working for somebody….so proud to be on the top of the class.  He can not afford seeing himself as an employee. Now, he ends up lonesome, has a family of his own and with no work at all.

Why gauge one’s intellect and skills with the much-awaited pricey diploma, handed during graduation? We are our own player.

Being an educated man is not just receiving a piece of paper every Commencement Exercise. It is about how you play the game of life. Not all is about the mind, but it should be coupled with the HEART.

  1. For me being educated is being able to observe what is going on around, find meaning and purpose for it and being able to do something about this awareness. Anyone can get an education, it is constant and progressive if one wills it to be, and it doesn’t always take place in the classroom.

It’s rather sad that many, if not most of those enrolled in college these days expect their diploma to be their passport to better paying jobs, or to greener pastures abroad. One would be alarmed that not all of them are actually suited for college. How many graduates fail in the board exams each time?

But what piques me more is an educational system which capitalizes on this, giving false hope, and jeopardizing quality for quantity.

  2. Hello Jun. Glad to see you here, pal.

Sure, education is NOT the ONLY tool one can succeed. Let’s take Bill Gates, the richest man in the whole world (for 11 or 12 consecutive years). The shocking thing is, he is a college drop-out. I really do not know the guys secret. I need to research on this. But for sure, he got his wealth through continuing education. It may not be the basic course outline we learn from the conventional schools.

I agree. Education in the Phils has become a profit-oriented venue for most (just like some foundations nowadays). It has become commercialized. The many the enrollees, the bigger the profit…

But honestly, I am not that skeptical about our state universities. I have not been enrolled to one, but I have met a lot of people, who are really smart as compared to graduates from private universities.

The crux of the matter, education is still important. Our politicians should focus on this in their political platforms for the next national election.

    • What, then, is the educated man? Is he the man who has read a lot? Partly yes, because his reading is serious and discriminate and uplifting. Is he the man who remembers many facts and events? Partly yes, because the training of memory is a wholesome discipline that requires effort and application and because one cannot make a sound judgement without respect for remembered facts. Is the educated man, then, one who because of his skill is able to provide for himself and his family? Partly yes, since education should teach us how to make a living. But there is one thing we should always remember and it is this — that far more important than the making of a living, is a living of life — a good life, a meaningful life, an abundant life.

The educated man lives this kind of a life, because he has opened the windows of his mind to great thoughts and ennobling ideas; because he is not imprisoned by the printed page, but chooses to make a relentless, rigorous analysis and evaluation of everything he reads; because he is less interested in the accumulation of degrees than in the stimulation of his mind and the cultivation of a generous spirit; because his interest is less in knowing who is right but more importantly, in discerning what is right and defending it with all the resources at his command; because he can express himself clearly and logically, with precision and grace; because he is not awed by authority, but is humble enough to recognize that his best judgment is imperfect and may well be tainted by error or pride; because he has a deep reverence for the inherent worth and dignity of every human being, as a creature of God; because he has a healthy sense of values, a breadth of outlook and the depth of compassion which a purposeful education generates; because whenever he talks about good government he is prepared and willing to sacrifice himself for it; and because he lives a life of relevance to the world in which we live, a sharing in the problems of his time and doing whatever he can with intelligence and fairness and understanding.

  3. hi
can i have also a copy of the oratorical piece of the Educated Man…pweeeeezzzz…tnx

PS. For me education is not simply providing people of a good job.. It is in utmost despair that education has evolved into a new meaning. What education simply means is to provide learning (on how Jesuit school has thought us, it would be appropriate to describe it as holistically).. These days it has been few who knows it; worse, a kindergarten kid who acknowledge the real meaning of it..

  5. Getting into a prestigious university should not be the gauge for one to be called “educated.”

I have a question. Is the essay written above, the one of CP Romulo?

    Thank you.

  6. being educated doesn’t mean going to a prestigious university all you need to do is to do your part as a student and you will learn every vital thing in life. it doesn’t mean educated is a person who knows everything instead a person who knows how to do something. Educated means to be able to do it not to be able to know it thanks a lot.

kindly forward me a copy of the piece thanks.

  7. Hi Ting,

I like reading your posts, lawom jud ba and very well-written, bitaw for me, education doesn’t only mean the kind of education we get from school. That is only one part of a whole. But since it is the only way people can measure how much learning a person has, like getting a diploma, a masters degree, phd etc…it is commonly used in measuring a persons level of learning. But in my opinion, there are many things we still need to learn about life and getting a degree is just a tool to aid us. Once we graduate and out of the security and predictability of university life, the real game of life begins. I believe education is very important and i have great respect for people who love learning, but I also believe there is something we can learn from everyone and everything.

  8. Education is apositive change in the body, mind and soul. Its true that education is not aguarantee for beng rich, but its agateway to richness. The most educated person should be the one who thinks positively, morally apprehensive, one who can be able to appreciate all kinds of people with their diversities.one who can atticulate issues with asober mind, aproblem solver.

  9. For me, education is not merely learned within the four walls of the classroom rather it is a result of the long term quest for what we ought to know – the absolute truth. what others had attained here on the surface of the earth- fantastic degree, great jobs- for me, are not the only things that could be called, as what majority used to label, the “fruits of education”. I believe as long as one lives a life towards finding the TRUTH that’s definitely what real education is all about. the pursuit of truth is the actual goal of education; yet a lot of us are enslaved by the wealth-searching minds. let us emancipate ourselves from this mental slavery and realize our ultimate purpose in life. i believe, Mahatma Gandhi is one of the very few educated men that had ever sprouted on earth for he lived a life by the principle of peace and love – the kind of knowledge we ought to know and apply.

  12. i guess they are the one who must act educated and civilized, they must show how they apply what they learn, be happy and contented but never to be proud of what he had achieve, every educated man must realize that their diplomas could never be the pass for their comfortable living. so they must know how to utilize the attainment they reached… -jamzie!

  16. for me an educated man is the person who believe in the word hope… because what is the purpose of education if in yourself, it is easily for you to give up… most educated man are successful because they have that strong faith and personality in their selves that despite of hindrances in life they are able to continue their desired sphere.and it results for their fruitful excellence… they are able to share the experience that made them successful…
so educated man is not just by reading and reading and reading, but rather being able to do the difficult things just by your own….
so educated man is suppose to be called as successful man also…

can you also send me a copy of “what is an educated man?” i just really need it!!! thanx a lot
    god bless…

  17. it is about a man that has believe in his self wherever he is not in exclusive school or a public.
an educated man is suppose to be called successful man also its because he has a knowledge that has a capability to enhance all he has.
    because he has a deep reverence for the inherit worth and dignity of every human being, as a creature of God; because he has a healthy sense of values, breadth of outlook, and the depth of compassion which a purposeful education generates;

  18. An educated man is not, necessarily, one who has an abundance of general or specialized knowledge. An educated man is one who has developed the faculties of his mind in such a way that he can acquire anything he wants, or its equivalent, without violating the rights of others.
